Derek's passion for golf began at a young age in Minnesota, raised in a family of golf enthusiasts. Excelling in high school, he soon realized his driving distance fell short compared to other top players in college. This realization led him to embrace the short game, dedicating thousands of hours to mastering greenside chip shots, spin control, and ball precision.
Deciding to turn professional, Derek moved to Phoenix, Arizona, attending the Golf Academy, where he accumulated several tournament victories. However, when he witnessed the remarkable improvement of his first student, cutting thirty-one strokes from their scorecard in less than a year, his true passion for teaching emerged.
Returning to Minnesota, Derek honed his teaching skills under the mentorship of PGA pro Steve Fessler, preparing himself for an outstanding teaching career. Affectionately known as the "Spin Doctor" of golf, Derek's expertise in the short game earned him recognition in the golfing community.
In 2008, he returned to Arizona and joined the Forty Niner Country Club in Tucson, where he experienced teaching success and rapid advancement. Eventually, he ventured out on his own and established Golf Better Tucson in 2011, a membership platform providing both online and in-person lessons to golfers seeking to enhance their performance.
From amateur players to seasoned PGA Tour winners like Don Pooley, Derek's positive teaching style and ability to simplify technical aspects have earned him widespread acclaim. The Southern Chapter PGA acknowledged his dedication to the field, crowning him Teacher of the Year in 2017.
With a growing community of satisfied students, Derek's reputation as a top-notch instructor is extending nationwide, making him a beloved figure in the world of golf coaching.
